Job description

 

Job Title: Community Education and Engagement Officer

Location: Addis Ababa (with occasional travel to regions)

Organization: CareEpilepsy Ethiopia

Type: Full-time, 12-month contract (renewable)

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

 

To work as part of the CEE Team to develop and deliver community-based information and support services in a range of venues across Ethiopia to people of all ages with epilepsy, their families, friends and carers, the professionals who care for them, and others involved in their lives. In addition, as a Community Education and Engagement Officer, you’ll help to organize and promote participation in local education or training opportunities.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

CareEpilepsy Ethiopia is the only dedicated organization in the country working exclusively on epilepsy. We aim to address the widespread neglect and stigma associated with epilepsy through advocacy, education, support services, and community engagement. Since 2016, we have worked alongside local communities, government agencies, and international partners to empower people with epilepsy and create a more inclusive society.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Community Education and Engagement Officer plays a key role in delivering epilepsy- focused awareness, education, and support services at the community level. The role involves organizing outreach programs, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that people with epilepsy and their families are better informed, supported, and empowered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Community Education & Awareness

  1. Design and implement epilepsy awareness events (e.g., International Epilepsy Day, National Epilepsy Week).
  2. Prepare and distribute flyers, posters, and other educational materials.
  3. Organize community-based training and workshops targeting schools, healthcare workers, and local institutions.
  4. Facilitate epilepsy information sessions to reduce stigma and increase public understanding.
  5. Assist in the registration and database management of patients and support patient-led groups and monthly community clinics;
  6. Engage with the public, media, and community leaders to promote epilepsy education and reduce stigma.
  7. Collaborate with local health centres, NGOs, and government bodies to expand outreach and strengthen partnerships.
  8. Working as part of a team to support and sustain community-led action around issues related to epilepsy.

 

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  1. Identify gaps in community support services and advocate for improved epilepsy care.
  2. Develop relationships with community-based organizations, schools, health centers, and local organizations.
  3. Support the strategic roadmap for partnership development in collaboration with leadership.
  4. Mobilize community groups and youth associations to participate in epilepsy initiatives.
  5. Clinical and Support Services
    1. Provide accurate epilepsy-related information and emotional support to patients and caregivers.
    2. Support EEG diagnostic service.
    3. Assist with home visits, patient follow-ups, and referrals to clinics where needed.
    4. Promote self-management of epilepsy through education and empowerment.
    5. Organize and participate in monthly patient support meetings.
    6. Help people with epilepsy to overcome existing barriers to learning;
    7. Organize and attend patient support group meeting, which will be held on the last Sunday of each month.
  6. Volunteer Coordination
    1. Recruit, train, and manage volunteers (youth and professionals) to assist with programs.
    2. Organize induction, safeguarding, and role-specific training sessions.
  7. Training & Capacity Building
    1. Support the planning and delivery of internal training programs, including clinical education and community response.
    2. Monitor training effectiveness and contribute to continuous improvement.Provide assistance to careepilepsy ethiopia’s Clinical Training Programs;

Communication and Events

  • Strengthen engagement through both digital and physical media.
  • Support planning and execution of CareEpilepsy events and campaigns.
  • Serve as a liaison with media, community leaders, and the public.

Administrative & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records and prepare regular activity reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly).
  • Respond to queries via phone and email and support office management.
  • Assist with organizing and documenting meetings.
  • Completing Patient Registration and keeping the database up-to-date;
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties in support of the CEE’s project requested by management.

 

 

Job requirements

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION – Knowledge, skills and attributes.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in community outreach or social work.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Able to type in English and Amharic.
  • Strong verbal and written communication in Amharic and English.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and culturally sensitive.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.

 

WORKING HOURS, PATTERNS AND ENVIRONMENT

  • Full-time role (40 hours/week), typically Monday to Friday, 2:30 am – 11:30 am Ethiopian time.
  • Required to attend monthly patient support group (last Sunday of each Ethiopian month).
  • Work is based in CareEpilepsy Ethiopia’s office but required to travel different sites and regions when necessary.
  • Working in different environments (both office-based and in the community), including some early morning and weekends).
