The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program (FARSP) is a prestigious opportunity for African scholars to advance their research and academic careers in the United States. Program Overview

The FARSP offers two types of grants tailored to different academic needs:

 

1. Research Grants

  • Duration: 3 to 9 months
  • Eligibility:
    • Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree at the time of application.
    • Post-doctoral research is not supported; preference is given to those with at least 3 years of university teaching experience and a strong scholarly record.
  • Focus: Conducting research in any academic discipline at a U.S. institution.
  • Timing: Research must begin between August 2026 and March 2027.

 

2. Program and Curriculum Development Grants

  • Duration: 3 to 5 months
  • Eligibility:
    • Open to university faculty or administrators with a master’s or equivalent graduate degree (a doctorate is not required).
    • Ideal for those with limited experience or access to recent research developments.
  • Focus: Proposals must link to professional duties and demonstrate how the scholar will use the experience to develop new courses, curricula, or academic programs at their home institution.

 

Eligibility Criteria for Fulbright African Research Scholar Program 2026-2027

To qualify for the FARSP, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Citizenship: Must be citizens of Ethiopia or permanent residents eligible for a passport from the country.
  2. Academic Qualifications:
    • Research grants require a terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent).
    • Curriculum development grants require at least a master’s degree.
  3. Experience:
    • Research grant applicants should have 3+ years of teaching experience.
    • Preference is given to those with limited U.S. experience and no prior Fulbright grants.
  4. Language Proficiency: Must have sufficient English proficiency to conduct research and collaborate effectively (TOEFL not required).
  5. Health: Must be in good health; successful candidates will submit a Medical History and Examination Report.
  6. Reapplication: Unsuccessful past applicants may reapply with revised proposals, updated CVs, and new recommendation letters.
Note: Proposals involving clinical medical research with patient contact are not eligible.
