Introduction

The Young Leaders for the SDGs initiative is back, and applications for the 2025 cohort are now open! This prestigious program, spearheaded by the United Nations, recognizes exceptional young individuals who are driving transformative change toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If you’re a young leader passionate about sustainability, human rights, or peace and security, this could be your chance to amplify your impact on a global stage.

What is the Young Leaders for the SDGs Initiative?

Every two years, 17 outstanding young leaders are selected to collaborate with the UN and its partners. These changemakers work to accelerate SDG implementation, advocate for youth engagement, and inspire action worldwide. The initiative provides a unique platform to elevate your work, connect with like-minded peers, and influence global agendas.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

  • Be between 15–35 years old at the time of application.
  • Have working-level proficiency in English.

The UN actively encourages applications from diverse backgrounds, including young women, persons with disabilities, Indigenous youth, LGBTIQ+ individuals, refugees, migrants, and rural youth.

What Makes a Strong Candidate?

The selection committee looks for young leaders who embody the following qualities:

1. Leadership

You inspire and mobilize others, demonstrating resilience and a clear vision for change. Whether through grassroots activism or global campaigns, your ability to unite people for a common cause sets you apart.

Your approach to solving pressing challenges is creative and original. You bring fresh perspectives to sustainable development, human rights, or peace and security.

3. Scalability

Your work has the potential to expand beyond its current scope—whether through replication, adaptation, or inspiration—reaching new communities and amplifying SDG progress.

4. Impact
