Introduction

The ILA is calling for applications for its 2025 Leadership Development Training, designed to equip emerging leaders with the skills, values, and strategic insights needed to tackle governance challenges and drive transformation in the region.
About the IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA)
The IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA) was established by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to nurture the next generation of African leaders. Rooted in the belief that Africa requires home-grown solutions to its unique challenges, ILA focuses on developing visionary, ethical, and gender-responsive leaders. The Academy was officially approved by the IGAD Heads of State and Governments Summit on 5th July 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya, and is hosted by the Kenya School of Government (KSG) at its Mombasa campus.
ILA’s mission is to provide mentorship, training, and peer-learning opportunities to young leaders, equipping them with the critical skill sets needed to steer Africa’s rapidly developing multi-cultural society in the 21st century and beyond.
The 2025 Leadership Development Training
With support from the Government of Japan, ILA is offering a comprehensive, specialized leadership development training program in 2025. This intensive training is designed to empower emerging leaders from the IGAD region with the skills, values, and strategic insights necessary to address governance challenges and drive transformation.
The training will be conducted in three cohorts throughout 2025 and will focus on specialized aspects of leadership, including:
- Good governance
- Peacebuilding
- Technology and innovation
- Gender-responsive leadership
- African leadership philosophies and global best practices

Eligibility Criteria
ILA is committed to a fair and merit-based selection process. The training is open to women and youth from IGAD Member States, including Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Age: 18-35 years
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in governance, leadership, or related fields
- Language: Proficiency in English (the training will be conducted in English)
- Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to ethical leadership, regional cooperation, and development, with a strong interest in policy, good governance, and sustainable peace
- Impact: Proven leadership experience and a track record of making a positive impact in communities, countries, or the IGAD region
- Availability: Willingness to travel to Kenya for the training and engage in ILA activities throughout the year
- Alumni Engagement: Commitment to actively participate in the ILA Alumni Network, fostering collaboration and peer learning

- Prepare Your Application Documents:
- A detailed CV (maximum three pages)
- A motivation letter (maximum two pages or 1,000 words) addressing the following:
- What inspires you to apply for this training, and how does this program align with your leadership goals and vision?
- Highlight past leadership roles or initiatives and the impact you have made in your community or country.
- Identify a specific leadership-related challenge you would like to address in your country or the IGAD region.
- Explain how you plan to use the knowledge gained at ILA to address this challenge or other leadership-related issues.
- Two recommendation letters from professional or academic referees.
