About the Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA)

The healthcare sector is facing unprecedented challenges, and the need for strong, ethical leadership has never been greater. The HLA was founded on the belief that the health service is not fixed in its current state—it can be transformed, and rapidly so, by individuals with the right skills, knowledge, and determination.

Since its inception in 2016, the HLA has been dedicated to identifying and developing healthcare professionals with outstanding leadership potential. Alumni include nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dentists, and allied health professionals from around the world. Over the next few years, the HLA will expand to three continents, recruiting Scholars from over 50 countries.

History

The HLA Scholarship Programme was established in 2016 to recognise and develop healthcare students and professionals with exceptional leadership potential. Over the years, we’ve grown from a single cohort in London to a global network with cohorts in Newcastle, Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Queensland.

Our Scholars come from diverse professional backgrounds, including nursing, medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and more. While many of  the Scholars are based in Europe, the virtual cohorts have welcomed participants from Ethiopia, Singapore, Japan, Siberia, and beyond.

The HLA is a member of the Council of Deans of Health in the UK and is supported by Medics.Academy, which ensures the programmes meet rigorous educational standards. We are also commissioned by NHS England and collaborate with prestigious institutions such as the World Health Organisation, the UK House of Lords, and universities worldwide, including University College London, University of Glasgow, and University of Queensland.

Upon completing the programme, Scholars are eligible for membership or Fellowship of the HLA (MHLA/FHLA), joining an elite network of healthcare leaders.

What Does the Programme Offer?

The HLA Scholar’s Programme is a 12-month leadership development journey designed to equip you with the skills and confidence to lead effectively in healthcare. Here’s what you can expect:

Programme Structure

  • 8 mandatory contact days: These sessions are held either in person at one of the education centres (London, Newcastle, Buckinghamshire, or Leeds) or virtually for global cohorts.
  • Weekly leadership theory content: Scholars spend approximately one hour per week studying written and recorded materials via the Scholar portal.
  • Interdisciplinary cohorts: Each cohort consists of 10-15 Scholars from diverse professional backgrounds and countries, fostering rich peer learning and collaboration.

Curriculum

The programme is mapped against the UK National Health Service Leadership Framework and covers six core domains:

  1. The Leader as a Communicator
  2. The Leader as a Manager
  3. The Leader as a Negotiator
  4. The Leader as an Innovator and Entrepreneur
  5. The Leader as a Follower
  6. The Leader as a Philosopher

Scholarly Projects

Scholars are expected to develop a leadership project of their choosing over the course of the year. Previous projects have gained national recognition, winning awards, being published, and presented at prestigious events.
