About Africa Health Sciences University

Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) is an accredited health sciences institution in Rwanda, dedicated to training the next generation of healthcare professionals in medicine, pharmacy, midwifery, nursing, laboratory technology, radiography, and other allied health fields. Bringing a wealth of expertise to the program, AHSU has diverse and experienced faculty from across the globe, including Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, the United States, Belgium, and others.

AHSU is recruiting highly qualified candidates for its second cohort of Master of Medicine residencies in six specialties, including anesthesiology and critical care; emergency medicine and critical care; general surgery; internal medicine; obstetrics and gynecology; and pediatrics. The cohort will commence in September 2025.

Program Overview

Residents will begin their training at the AHSU campus in Kigali with two months of cross-cutting courses, covering foundational concepts in medical practice, forensic medicine and medical ethics, global health, digital health, and research methodologies beginning September 1, 2025.

Afterward, residents will transition to hands-on clinical rotations at AHSU’s affiliated teaching hospitals, including:

  • King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR)
  • Kibungo Level II Teaching Hospital
  • Kibuye Level II Teaching Hospital

AHSU is currently recruiting strong candidates for the following specialties, all of which are 4 years in duration:

  • Anesthesiology and Critical Care
  • Emergency Medicine and Critical Care
  • General Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Pediatrics

Eligibility Criteria

 

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution. International equivalency requirements can be found on the Higher Education Council (HEC)’s website.
  • Valid license to practice medicine.
  • Ability to express oneself in both written and spoken English.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Application Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents. All documents should be in English or have notarized translations to be considered:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Passport or Rwanda national ID.
  • Certified copies of academic transcripts and degrees.
  • Valid medical license to practice.
  • Cover letter outlining your interest in joining AHSU and your selected specialty.
  • Letter of good conduct from your employer or medical council.
  • Names and contact details of three references, including at least one academic mentor and one professional supervisor.

Admissions Process

The admissions process evaluates candidates holistically, considering academic performance, professional experience, and application documents. Shortlisted candidates will take an entrance exam, and top candidates will then be invited for admission interviews.
