Introduction

The Swedish Institute (SI) offers the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, a prestigious and fully-funded scholarship designed for ambitious professionals aiming to pursue a one- or two-year master’s degree in Sweden. This scholarship is not only an opportunity to gain world-class education but also to become part of a network of global leaders committed to driving sustainable development in their home countries.

Overview

The SI Scholarship for Global Professionals supports full-time master’s studies in over 700 English-taught programs across various Swedish universities. The scholarship is open annually for studies commencing in the autumn semester. It aims to foster future leaders who will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

What’s Included

  • Full Tuition Fee Coverage: SI pays the tuition fees directly to the Swedish university each semester.
  • Monthly Allowance: SEK 12,000 for living expenses throughout the study period.
  • Travel Grant: A one-time payment of SEK 15,000 (or SEK 10,000 for scholars from specific countries).
  • Professional Network Membership: Access to the SI Network for Future Global Professionals (NFGP) during studies and the SI Alumni Network after graduation.

Note: The scholarship does not include insurance, additional grants for family members, or cover the application fee to University Admissions.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Country of Citizenship

You must be a citizen of one of the 33 eligible countries:

  • Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia
  • Asia: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Europe: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine
  • Latin America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru
  • Middle East: Egypt, Iraq, Jordan

2. Master’s Program Eligibility

Apply for a master’s program that is eligible for the SI scholarship. Over 700 programs are available, covering various fields.

3. University Admission

  • You must be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities.
  • Apply through University Admissions and be admitted (or conditionally admitted) to an eligible master’s program by the notification date.

4. Work Experience

  • Applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine: Proof of work experience is required; no minimum hours specified.
  • Applicants from other eligible countries: At least 3,000 hours of work experience from a maximum of three employers.

5. Leadership Experience

Demonstrate leadership experience from your current or previous employment or civil society engagement.

Ineligibility:

  • Current or previous students in Swedish universities.
  • Individuals who have resided in Sweden for two years or more prior to the scholarship period.
  • Holders of Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship, or those with permanent residency in Sweden.
  • Previous recipients of SI scholarships (with some exceptions).

Key Dates for the 2025/2026 Academic Year

  • 1 November 2024: SI Scholarship application documents and list of eligible master’s programs published.
  • 15 October 2024 – 15 January 2025: Apply for master’s programs via University Admissions.
  • 10 February – 26 February 2025: SI Scholarship application portal open.
  • 27 March 2025: University Admissions results announced.
  • 24 April 2025: SI Scholarship recipients announced.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1: Apply for a Master’s Program

Deadline: 15 January 2025

  1. Choose Eligible Programs: Review the list of eligible master’s programs (available from 1 November 2024).
  2. Create an Account: Register on University Admissions.
  3. Submit Applications: You can apply for up to four programs.
  4. Pay Application Fee: Ensure the fee is paid by the specified deadline.
  5. Save Application Number: You will receive an eight-digit application number—keep this for your scholarship application.

Note: If applying to the Stockholm School of Economics, Konstfack, or Stockholm University of the Arts, follow their specific admission procedures.

Step 2: Prepare Your SI Scholarship Application

Application Period: 10 February – 26 February 2025

Required Documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV):
    • Use the SI template provided for 2025/2026.
    • Maximum of three pages.
    • Highlight experiences relevant to your application.
  2. Proof of Work and Leadership Experience:
    • Use the SI template.
    • Must be signed by a referee and stamped with an official stamp or notarized.
    • Combine all proofs into one PDF file.
  3. Two Letters of Reference:
    • Use the SI template.
    • One must be based on work experience.
    • The second can be from work or civil society engagement.
    • Must be signed and stamped.
    • Upload as one PDF file.
  4. Passport/National ID Copy:
    • Clear copy showing your personal data and citizenship.
    • Ensure it’s valid at the time of application.
  5. Motivation Letter:
    • To be filled out in the application portal.
    • You may be required to submit a short video presentation.

Important Tips:

  • Language: All documents must be in English.
  • Formatting: Follow the templates strictly.
  • Submission: Only one scholarship application is needed, regardless of the number of master’s programs applied for.
  • Deadline: Submit before the portal closes on 26 February 2025.

Step 3: SI Screening and Evaluation

Period: 27 February – 26 March 2025

  • Screening: SI will verify eligibility and completeness of applications.
  • Evaluation: Applications are assessed based on the scholarship’s aim, leadership experience, and potential to contribute to sustainable development.

Step 4: University Admissions Results

Date: 27 March 2025

  • Check Your Admission Status: You must be admitted or conditionally admitted to an eligible program.
  • Conditional Admission: Follow instructions from University Admissions to finalize your status.
  • Reserve List: Being on a waiting list does not qualify for the scholarship.

Step 5: Final Evaluation and Announcement

Evaluation Period: 27 March – 24 April 2025

  • Final Selection: SI makes the final decision, considering various factors to ensure a diverse group of recipients.
  • Announcement: Scholarship recipients will be announced on 24 April 2025 on the SI website.
  • Notification: Only successful applicants will be notified via email.

Acceptance of Scholarship

  • Response Required: Recipients must accept or decline the offer by the specified deadline.
  • Email Accuracy: Ensure your contact details are up to date.

After the Scholarship

  • Network Membership: During your studies, you’ll be part of the NFGP.
  • Alumni Network: Post-graduation, join the SI Alumni Network for continued professional development.

Additional Information

  • Insurance: The scholarship does not include insurance; check with your university for coverage.
  • Family Members: No additional grants are provided for family.
  • No Changes Allowed: Scholarship only applies to the awarded program and period.
