Job description

Junior Researcher (Malaria Microscopist)

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 530/2023 as biomedical research, clinical trial and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

Therefore, the Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Research Directorate, is looking for self-driven, motivated and energetic researchers to join our team as Junior Researcherers (Malaria Microscopists).

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Malaria microscopy; diagnosis, species identification and determination of load.
  • Prepare specimens, view them under the microscopy, take notes of the perceptions
  • Record or photograph the microscopic images
  •  Work closely with laboratory and data management team
  • Execute other responsibilities coming from the Malaria Research Team

Job requirements

 

Qualifications: 

  • Education: BSc Degree in Laboratory Sciences/Technology from a recognized institution, having experience in malaria microscopy is an advantage

Skills and Competences

  • Basic computer skills (MS word, excel, power point, etc)
  • Self-driven, motivated and result oriented
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal communication
  • Willing to support others and share workloads
  • Flexible to work off-working hours or weekends and holidays as needed

Positions available: 2 (two) 

Duty station: Adama

Salary: ETB 10,386.00

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability.
