Introduction

The Africa Centers for Disease Control (Africa CDC) has partnered with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Office to the African Union and YouthHubAfrica to launch the Bingwa PLUS Initiative. This exciting program is now open for applications, offering a unique opportunity for young African health enthusiasts to make a tangible impact in their communities.

What is Bingwa PLUS?

Bingwa PLUS is an extension of the successful African Union Bingwa Initiative, which played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic by mobilizing Youth Health Advocates, known as Bingwas. These young champions were instrumental in rallying communities and increasing vaccination uptake across Africa. Building on this legacy, Bingwa PLUS aims to further empower young health leaders by enhancing their ability to design, fund, and manage effective community health projects.

Through this four-month incubation program, participants will acquire essential skills to tackle critical health challenges, strengthen their leadership and innovation capacities, and establish resilient structures that can support the continent during health crises.

Who Should Apply?

Bingwa PLUS is seeking passionate and driven individuals who are eager to create scalable, youth-led, and community-focused health initiatives. The ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of a member state of the African Union.
  • Age: Between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Passion for Public Health: Demonstrated leadership potential, experience, and enthusiasm for improving health outcomes within their communities.
  • Proposal Submission: Ability to present a well-thought-out proposal that clearly identifies a health challenge and offers a scalable solution.
  • Availability: Commitment to participate in the four-month incubation program.
  • Inclusivity: Applicants from marginalized or disadvantaged backgrounds, including gender minorities, youth from rural areas, youth with disabilities, and those from geographically underrepresented regions, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Priority Areas: Ideas addressing current disease outbreaks and health emergencies, such as Mpox and Marburg, will receive priority consideration.
