Job description

.

Background

Vaccination against the diseases is one of the most effective interventions done on individuals and the public. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that travelers consult with a travel health professional at least 2 weeks before departure. Planning to have vaccinations before trips are received ahead of time gives protection against the disease. The vaccine protects travelers from acquiring diseases abroad. Only a limited number of health facilities provide travel-related vaccination services in Addis Ababa City; Tikur Anbesa Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, and Bole International Airport.

The World Health Organization (WHO) granted financial support that strengthens vaccination provision to avert communicable disease in the country.  The Travel and Border Health Service Directorate at Ethiopian Public Health Institutes (EPHI) ensures the existence of the recommended International Health Regulation (IHR-2005) principles concerning travel-related diseases of public health interest.

The Travel and Border Health Service Directorate, is planning to recruit health professionals for the position of data encoder. The data encoder will work under the supervision of the Ethiopian Public Health Institutes (EPHI) and directly report to the EPHI. The specific location for this job position will be at the Tikur Anbesa traveler vaccination center, Addis Ababa. The specific role and responsibilities of them have been mentioned below under the job description section of this document.

Objective

The objective of this post is to have a fully dedicated data encoder that implements a surveillance system as per the International Health Regulation (IHR-2005) principles on vaccination concerning travel-related diseases.

contract Duration and Remuneration

  • The contract will be for one year with possible extension based on the satisfactory performance and the need as of business continuity.
  • The salary will be based on the institute’s contract scale

Key Responsibilities:

  • Input traveler  demographic data, medical histories, diagnoses, and treatments into electronic health records  systems with precision and speed.
  • Verify and validate traveler information for accuracy and completeness, resolving discrepancies as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of traveler records
  • Coordinate with healthcare providers and administrative staff to ensure timely and accurate data entry and retrieval.
  • Generate reports, summaries, and statistical analyses of healthcare data as required.
  • Assist in quality assurance activities related to data entry and management.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for information from healthcare providers and patients.
  • Stay updated on healthcare industry regulations and best practices related to data management and privacy.

Job requirements

 

Qualification: Health professional with a minimum of listed working experiences

  • Diploma, 8 years
  • Bachelor’s, 6 years
  • Master’s, 4 years

Required Number: Two (2)

Minimum base Salary: as per the institute contract scale

Location: Addis  Ababa

Employment Type: Contract

  • Proven experience as a Data Encoder or similar role in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and coding
  • Familiarity with electronic health records systems and healthcare information management software.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Medical Coding or Healthcare Information Management .
  • Experience with data entry in healthcare databases or electronic health records systems.
  • Understanding of healthcare compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and other relevant software tools.

Working Conditions:

  • Typically office-based within a healthcare facility.
  • Regular working hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime during busy periods.
  • Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods.
