Organization Profile and Background

Pastoralist Concern PC is a pastoralist-initiated, -inspired and -led CSO working toward sustainable development in pastoralist areas of Ethiopia since 1995, their vision is “to see improved and sustainable livelihood of the pastoralist communities of Ethiopia and further realize strong co-operations with neighboring countries’ pastoralist communities.” PC works within our target area in the Somali region, engaging in both multi-sector development programming and emergency responses across diverse sectors that include health and nutrition, WASH, environmental resilience, education, protection and women’s empowerment. PC works with the hard-to-reach pastoralist and Agro-pastoralist populations, including in Somali region. Skills training, mobilization and organization, awareness creation, input provision, value chain development, and market linkages are among the key strategies and approaches of PC to improving health and nutrition and to building livelihood resilience. PC has roughly 110 permanent staff, including staff with technical experience in community-based programming, protection, gender, GBV, resilience, WASH, Health and Nutrition who are based at their head office and field offices. The combined experience and technical expertise of Concern and PC means that we are well positioned to have a strong impact by implementing the targeted cross-border Irish Aid Child Wasting Initiative in the targeted pastoral communities.

We work in the sectors of Rural Development, WASH, Natural Resource Management and Social Development as well as Civil Society Strengthening.

Project overview

Pastoralist has a partnership agreement with FHI 360 with the project title “Integrated Services for Humanitarian Implementation – Ethiopia III (ISHI-E III)”to be implemented in Charati, Hargelle, Filtu, Dekasuftu and Kersadulla woredas of Afdher and Liban zones respectively within the 10 months of the project life.

For this project implementation we are seeking a qualified and motivated health assistant to join our team in the Somali Region, Filtu district and Afder district.

Objective of the position

This role plays a vital part in our mission by providing critical counseling, education, and support to mothers and caregivers on best practices for infant and young child feeding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments of infant and young child feeding practices to identify mothers and caregivers who require additional support.
  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to mothers and caregivers on breastfeeding techniques, proper positioning and attachment, complementary feeding practices, and the importance of good hygiene.
  • Educate mothers and caregivers on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and the continued importance of breastfeeding alongside complementary foods up to two years of age.
  • Address misconceptions and cultural beliefs that may hinder optimal infant and young child feeding practices.
  • Promote the use of safe and appropriate feeding methods and discourage the use of bottles and unhealthy feeding practices.
  • Monitor the growth and development of infants and young children and identify any potential malnutrition cases.
  • Collaborate with health professionals, community volunteers, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive approach to infant and young child feeding within the community.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all IYCF activities and interventions.
  • Participate in training programs to stay updated on the latest IYCF guidelines and best practices.

Job requirements

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with a valid license to practice in Ethiopia.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in maternal and child health or a related field, especially in NGO
  • Strong clinical skills in infant and young child feeding practices, including breastfeeding promotion and counseling.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and counseling skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with mothers, caregivers, and healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Fluency in Somali and English is a must and ability to speak Amharic is strong asset.
  • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and a passion for improving child health outcomes.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., MS Office).
