Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Since the inception of IOM in 1951, Movement Operations have been and continue to be a fundamental pillar of the Organization’s work. The organized movement of persons in need of international migration assistance is a primary mandate of the Organization and a cornerstone of IOM’s operations. This mandate has resulted in the international transport of more than 15 million migrants and refugees worldwide. Movement Operations Units in various IOM Country Offices, coordinated under the Division of Resettlement and Movement Management (RMM) in the Department of Operations and Emergencies (DOE) at IOM’s Geneva Headquarters (HQ), are responsible for all aspects of travel for migrants and refugees under IOM’s auspices, in accordance with the various framework agreements with resettlement and receiving Governments and partners across the spectrum of the Organization’s programmes.

Background

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technologist and the overall supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer (CMHO), the incumbent will assist the operational activity of laboratory services with respect to Migration Health Assessments (HAP) and other programmes implemented by the IOM Migration Health Division in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Core Functions / Responsibilities: 

  1. Work with laboratory staff to conduct various activities including specimen collection, specimen transportation, reagent and test preparation, and laboratory testing using the appropriate standard equipment
  2. Ensure standards and the quality of laboratory outcomes, by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for assigned duties.
  3. Adhere to bio-safety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and others.
  4. Assist technical personnel for accurate, efficient and timely delivery of laboratory results by receiving and processing request forms, data entry, scheduling of clients, printing and submitting laboratory test reports.
  5. Assist in documenting and keeping records of laboratory activities in an organized and easily retrievable manner, as well as maintaining the laboratory database.
  6. Support the laboratory stock management and monitoring by verifying that equipment and consumables are sufficient for the anticipated daily work.
  7. Participate in updating of SOPs as needed.
  8. Participate in the improvement of laboratory services according to adopted work plan in the laboratory.
  9. Perform such other duties as may be assigned

 

Job requirements

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Educational Qualification

  • Fresh graduate with a university Degree in Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution and holds a valid professional license

Experience

  • Good knowledge of computer skills
  • Good communication skills, drive for results, flexibility, efficiency, and respect for diversity
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality is mandatory.
  • Fresh graduate (within one year of graduation

Skills

  • Knowledge of Technical Laboratory skills and workflow.
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate

Languages

  • Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Working knowledge of French is an advantage.

In all cases, a prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station, or in the neighbouring country located within commuting distance, and a work permit, as applicable.
