Job Purpose and Organizational Context

The UN Health Care Center has the responsibility to provide both core and non-core services to all UN staff and their eligible dependents based in Ethiopia. This responsibility includes provision of support to staff and dependents during the occurrence of different disasters and pandemics, processing MEDEVAC among other staff well-being activities.

The present ToR is intended to specify the type of emergency nursing services required and guide the incumbents of the position on the dispensation of their duties at the respective duty station, ensure clients safety, and satisfaction, and respect the organization’s rules and regulations from the health standpoint of view.

Duties and Responsibilities

I. Duties at the Emergency Room

Patient Assessment and Triage:

  • Promptly assess patients upon arrival to determine the severity and urgency of their condition.
  • Assign appropriate triage levels based on established protocols to ensure patients are seen in order of medical priority.
  • Transfer, Take or move patients to the emergency room and administer healthcare and first aid treatment before the doctor arrives.

Emergency Care and Stabilization:

  • Provide immediate and appropriate nursing interventions to stabilize patients with life-threatening conditions.
  • Demonstrate a systematic, prioritized approach to resuscitation and stabilization of medical, surgical, and traumatic emergencies.
  • Administer medications, start intravenous lines, provide oxygen therapy, and perform other nursing procedures as needed.
  • Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, symptoms, and response to treatment.
  • Promptly report any changes in patient condition or concerns to the appropriate healthcare providers.
  • Create an order and administer for basic medical tests to be conducted for diagnosis in emergency situations.
  • Take accurate record of patients’ health history, vital signs, and relevant laboratory results.
  • Carry out tests as instructed by a medical doctor.
  • Employ expertise in conducting physical examinations on patients and interpret their health conditions from their medical history.
  • Assist physicians with advanced medical procedures, such as intubation, central line placement, and emergency surgery preparation.

Patient Education and Discharge:

  • Educate patients and their families on the nature of the patient’s condition, treatment plan, and discharge instructions.
  • Coordinate with other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth transition of care upon discharge or transfer to other units.

Documentation and Communication:

  • Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, and responses to treatment in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, other nurses, and members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Ensure readiness of the Emergency room and ambulance at all times

II. Duties at the outpatient clinic:

  • Administer primary care to both children and adults, women respectively.
  • Perform minor procedures when the need arises.
  • Identify medical problem(s) in patient(s)
  • Take blood samples of patients.
  • Maintain proper supplies of medical equipment and medications.
  • Administer vaccinations and maintain cold chain for vaccines shipped to duty stations.
  • Assists the Medical Officer in stabilizing serious patients and accompanying them outside Addis Ababa on medical evacuations.
  • Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, and laboratory rapid tests using test kits.
  • In the absence of the Medical Officer, provide routine care to the clients.
  • Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly before the patient sees the UN Medical Officer or travels to medical facilities outside the duty station, as indicated.
  • Ensures preparedness of staff traveling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit where available.
  • Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.
  • Dispense medications and keep proper records.
  • Regularly check stock for expiration and place orders for replenishment of stock.
  • Reports any problems with the medical equipment and ensures regular maintenance.
  • Accompany patients on medical evacuations, when necessary, abroad or within the country
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Always apply confidentiality.
  • Master the online documentation system (earthmed)

Job requirements

 

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • B.Sc. in emergency medicine and Critical Care Nursing or related field.
  • National registration and license are required.
  • Knowledge in Anesthesiology, BLS, ACLS/ALS, PALS is an advantage.

Experience:

  • Two years of work experience in emergency nursing and clinical nursing /related areas in a well-organized Clinic
  • Work Experience in an international organization is an advantage

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
