Job Description

The primary function of woreda project coordinator will be implementing Community Engagement and Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) interventions within a community-based health promotion program.

Specific Responsibilities :

  1. Conduct Community Needs Assessment and village mapping: Conduct a thorough needs assessment to understand the specific health needs, priorities, and challenges of the community. Engage community members, leaders, and stakeholders in the assessment process to ensure their active involvement and ownership.
  2. Program Planning and Coordination: woreda-level coordinators are responsible for planning and coordinating the implementation of community engagement and SBCC interventions at the woreda level. This includes developing detailed work plans, timelines, and budgets in collaboration with program managers and other stakeholders.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement: coordinators engage and collaborate with various stakeholders at the district level, including government officials, community leaders, civil society organizations, and healthcare providers. They establish effective partnerships and maintain regular communication to ensure the smooth implementation of interventions and promote community ownership.
  4. Training and Capacity Building: They provide training and capacity-building support to community health workers, volunteers, and other frontline workers involved in the program. This includes training on SBCC techniques, community mobilization strategies, effective communication, and behavior change theories. Facilitators also organize refresher training sessions to enhance the skills and knowledge of the workforce.
  5. Community Mobilization: coordinators play a key role in mobilizing communities and promoting their active participation in health promotion activities. They facilitate community meetings, focus group discussions, and other participatory approaches to gather input, address concerns, and ensure community involvement in decision-making processes.
  6. SBCC Strategy Implementation: coordinators implement SBCC strategies at the woreda level, ensuring the effective dissemination of health messages and materials. They collaborate with communication experts, creative teams, and media partners to develop culturally appropriate and linguistically sensitive communication materials, campaigns, and media outreach activities.
  7. Initiate and follow up Community based Family circle program and Community action cycle in collaboration with stakeholders
  8. Monitoring and Evaluation: coordinators monitor the progress and impact of community engagement and SBCC interventions at the district level. They collect data, conduct regular monitoring visits, and participate in review meetings, evaluations to assess the effectiveness of interventions, identify challenges, and make recommendations for program improvement.
  9. Reporting and Documentation: They prepare regular reports on the implementation of community engagement and SBCC activities, including progress updates, challenges faced, and outcomes achieved. Coordinators document best practices, success stories, and lessons learned to inform future program planning and share knowledge with stakeholders.
  10. Quality Assurance: coordinators ensure the quality and adherence to standards in the implementation of community engagement and SBCC interventions. They provide guidance and support to HEWs field teams, monitor the fidelity of interventions, and facilitate corrective actions as needed to ensure the effectiveness and integrity of the program.
  11. Advocacy and Networking: They engage in advocacy efforts at the district level and community level to promote policy changes and create an enabling environment for health behavior change. coordinators establish networks and partnerships with relevant organizations to leverage resources, share experiences, and coordinate efforts for sustainable health promotion.

Overall, the role of woreda-level project coordinators in community-based health promotion programs is to facilitate the implementation of community engagement and SBCC interventions, ensure coordination among stakeholders, and promote community participation and ownership. They serve as a bridge between the program managers, community members, and various stakeholders, working towards improving health outcomes at the woreda level.

Competencies and skills

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, to remain flexible to a changing environment, and to make decisions independently.
  • Ability to work well within a cross-cultural team.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Fluency in English, Amharic and local language
  • Basic Microsoft computer application skill
  •  Motor cycle driver license will be an asset.

Number: One in each woreda ( Total 8)

Sex: Both

Location 1. Afar Region, chifra Woreda, dubti Town, berahle Woreda, dalol Woreda, dalifaghe Woreda and telalak Woreda

Location 2. South Omo, bena tsemay and malie woreda

Recruitment  Contract: 1 Year with possibility of extension  based on availability  of grant

Qualifications:

Educational background

  • Minimum BSC degree in public health or related social science with more than 2 years related work experience
  •  Experience in NGO working environment will be an asset
