Job Description

This is an external vacancy announcement from Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) Hub for Research and Training in Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda). The GEOHealth Hub is a research and training platform centered at Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health that was established with grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States of America in School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences. The project focuses on air pollution and health, occupational safety and health, climate change, and Health research. The School of Public Health at Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences wants to hire, on a contract basis, a professional in the following job position for GEOHealth project.

Job title: Research Administrator

The research administrator will coordinate the research team and ensure that the field team training, data collection, data analysis, data quality assurance, and overall research project objectives are met according to the research timeline.

Job description

  • Coordinate and lead GEOHealth-related research activities: Children’s Health Study (CHS), Hospital morbidity and mortality study, and occupational health studies.
  • Develop/ adopt standard operating procedures and field operational manuals for the GEOHealth research.
  • Lead and organize field team training on data quality assurance as appropriate
  • Prepare necessary SOP to ensure data quality
  • Coordinate the work of field researchers, data manager, data clerk, data analyst, and field team training as appropriate.
  • Lead the data collection process, including data collection at the source, database handling, data entry, and quality assurance.
  • Manage and coordinate data analysis efforts in coordination with the data management specialist of GEOHealth investigator
  • Assist with field work as needed, including direct involvement in data collection.
  • Assist with research equipment management: training, handling during data collection, quality assurance during measurement in the field, and safe handling of the instruments.
  • Directly participate in data collection, including field supervision
  • Involved in Manuscript writing for the related research themes
  • Ensure data quality assurance during data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Keep the confidentiality of the collected data and not use other than for the intended purpose
  • Produce a technical report on research sub-projects periodically on an agreed schedule
  • Update the GEOHealth Hub PIs/Co-Investigators on progress on weekly Skype calls
  • Work closely with the Hub manager, data manager, analyst, investigators, other GEOHealth team members, and SPH/CHS academic and admin support staff.
  • Communicate with partners effectively through pertinent modes of communication such as email and regular Skype calls as appropriate.
  • Work on any related assignment about GEOHealth research activities.

Monthly Salary: Attractive, negotiable; subjected to tax based on Ethiopian tax regulation.

Required number: (1) one

Duration and condition of employment: one year with possible extension based on the candidate’s performance and project period.

Job Requirements

Qualification & required skills

  • Master in public health/Environmental Health/Environmental Science or Master of Science in a health-related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability in research execution using various approaches such as health facility, school, and community-based surveys.
  • Experience managing and monitoring research activities, particularly research related to environmental and occupational health, is preferred.
  • Well-oriented toward the health system of Ethiopia, particularly the hospital’s Health Management Information system (HMIS).
  • Experience in indoor Air Pollution and ambient air pollution research is desirable.
  • Experience in handling Monitoring equipment for household air pollution assessment
  • Excellent communication, computer skills, and fluency in English
