Job description

Project vacancy announcement

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) has been conducting therapeutic efficacy studies of anti-malaria drugs based on WHO guidelines for two decades. We have used the result as input for the national malaria control and elimination program. Currently, based on consultation with the national malaria elimination program, EPHI is completing preparation to conduct an efficacy study for Artemether Lumefantrine (AL). Chloroquine (CQ), and Dihydroartemisinin Piperaquine (DHA-PPQ) in four to six selected sentinel sites in this transmission season (October—December 2022).

The Malaria and NTDs research team under the Bacterial, Parasitic and Zoonotic diseases Directorate (BPZD) in EPHI run several projects in collaboration with different stockholders and partners. To facilitate and support the human resource field work on data collection the directorate would like to engage MSc students to take part in the above-mentioned title for their fulfillment of MSc thesis. The main importance of the students is to support field research team with field-based data collection, manage. track and report the projects activities with the collaboration of the project PI for their MSc thesis. Respond to any assignment given to the project Pl. In addition, the student supports the laboratory team on assigned tasks in the laboratory. Finally, in collaboration and agreement with the PI and advisor, the MSc student will prepare their final MSc thesis and should submit final thesis copy to EPHI.

Required students: Four MSc students

Objectives of the project: To assess the therapeutic efficacy of AL and DHA-PPQ for uncomplicated P. falciparum and CQ, DHA-PPQ for uncomplicated P.vivax infections based on parasitological, clinical and hematological parameters.

Specific objectives

1. To measure the clinical and parasitological response of DHA-PPQ and/or AL in patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum in 28/42-day follow-up period.

2. To measure the clinical and parasitological response of DHA-PPQ and/or CQ in patients with uncomplicated P. vivax malaria in 28/42-day follow-up period.

3. To differentiate recrudescence from new infection in 28/42-day follow-up period

4. To evaluate the incidence of adverse events in 28/42-day follow-up period

Criteria for student selection:

• Have completed the courses from the university and got above 3.0 GPA.

• Who could prepare oral presentation at convenient time

• Have assigned advisors and who can sign MOU with his/her university advisors.

• Committed to spend on assigned health facility until data collection completed.

Study Sites to be assigned

• Probable site Methara (Oromia), Hamusit (Amhara), Arbaminch (SNNPR), Shewarobit (Amhara), Dire Dawa and Secha or Dila health centers will be selected according to their malaria incidence and infrastructure.
