Living conditions and remarks
Benishangul Gumuz region is passing through a protracted conflict driven emergency since 2017 that resulted in a significant part of the population as IDPs. As of July 2022, the Regional DRMC announced that a total of 469, 609 (nearly 45% of the total population of the region) population in the region are IDPs in three of the zones. About 266,178 IDPs (57 %) of the IDPS are residing in Metekel, 137,575 (29%) in Kamashi Zone, and 65,856(14%) in the Assosa zone. Overall, the conflict has resulted in exacerbating the vulnerability of children, pregnant and lactating women in the region accounting 23% of the affected population. Recently, in Metekel zone, a totally of 26,276 Gumuz IDPs who were sheltered in the jungle has returned to town centered IDP sites, which calls for a coordinated emergency response to support vulnerable women and children. The security situation in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region remains tense and unpredictable. High levels of UAG activity were reported in Metekel, and Kamashi zones and Mao-Komo Special woreda of Assosa zone. The peace dialogue and negotiation between UAGs and Government is not resulting in a promised amicable solution to the conflict. In May 2022, it was reported that UAGs in Kamshi who accepted the peace deal with the government has returned to the bushes. Armed conflicts between UAGs and government forces continued clashing on a sporadic pattern. As a result, humanitarian access is highly hampered, making it difficult for humanitarian partners to carry out lifesaving responses. As of June 2022, in terms of accessibility for humanitarian assistance, out of 17 conflict affected woredas, 2 are accessible, 7 woredas are partially accessible and the rest 8 are inaccessible.
