African Union Liaison Officer, Addis Ababa

About the Role

Global Health Strategies (GHS) is an international organization that works to ensure the delivery of life-saving health products, technologies, and information to those who need them the most. We research and analyze policy, provide evidence-based information, develop audience-specific communications materials, and implement programs on health-related issues that disproportionately impact developing nations.

GHS is looking for an African Union Liaison Officer, with working knowledge of French and preferably located in Addis Ababa, to support several of its client programs. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the workings of the African Union and existing relationships with key individuals.

The AU Liaison Officer will act as a liaison between GHS, its clients and the AU. They will grow and nurture effective relationships with the AU Commission and its directorates, regional blocks, and coalitions involved with clients’ agendas. To ensure success they need to have outstanding knowledge of the AU legislative process and a clear understanding of clients’ causes. Top candidates have excellent communication and people skills. Specific responsibilities include using strong relationships with the AU officials and a deep understanding of AU institutions to conduct the following activities:

Advisory

  • Conduct landscape analysis and stakeholder mapping, as requested by GHS
  • Provide intelligence and advice on AU working structure, protocols and policy
  • Provide on-the-ground support and assist GHS in identifying, connecting and engaging with key AU officials on priority issues and advocacy initiatives for policy and financing outcomes

Advocacy

  • Identify strategic moments and engage champions to influence target stakeholders and amplify client goals and Follow trends in global health policies and funding opportunities to continuously innovate on strategy
  • Get partners on the same page through careful coordination, relationship management and message alignment; Get partners, influencers, and decision-makers in the same place by overseeing high-level events, including identifying invitees and speakers, and developing agendas, thematic content, or presentations; Build coalitions of support around issues with dedicated outreach, organization, and relationship management

Relationship Building

  • Growing relationships and collaborating with various parties involved with clients’ programs to identify common ground
  • Growing and executing engagement strategies for GHS and its clients and representing clients before the African Union and its agencies, ensuring clients’ policies and positions are shared with AU officials and appropriate parties
  • Attending events and meetings

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with the African Union
  • Strong knowledge of the decision-making processes and procedures at the African Union
  • Established relationships with key stakeholders, preferable in the areas of health, gender, nutrition, agriculture, or economic recovery
  • Public health and/or global development experience

Valuable Qualifications

  • International work experience; experience working across cultures and geographies
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Proficiency in French
