Family Planning & EPI Nurse (Antenatal Care)
Job Description:
- General Duty and Responsibility
The major functions of a nurse in a family planning center are to provide care, to reassure the client, and to provide information. During the consultation the client may feel a greater rapport with the nurse than with the physician, and may show greater willingness to speak about the medial history or significant symptoms with the nurse. The nurse carefully explains the prescription after the medical consultation and instructs the client if any additional tests or procedures are required. Using visual aids and calendars, the nurse explains how different contraceptive methods work and explains the schedule for taking oral contraceptives. The nurse describes the procedure to be followed if an abortion is sought, and brings up the topic of subsequent contraception. After an abortion, the nurse should provide individualized instructions on the contraceptive method, with attention to the circumstances of the contraceptive failure that led to abortion. Advice should be given to clients who forgot to take a pill or use their method. The use of condoms and vaginal methods should be explained, especially to young clients and those with sporadic sex lives. The client should be made aware of the possibility of “morning after” methods in case of unprotected intercourse. During any family planning interview, the nurse should inform the client about follow-up care, the use of condoms along with the contraceptive method to prevent AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, the need for good sexual hygiene, and other issues.
