IMAM Research Project Manager

Project Background

The revised guidelines endorsed by the GoE in June 2019 includes both MAM and SAM in the same document and recommends a new approach called Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) that integrated the delivery of MAM and SAM services at the facility level and ensure continuum of care. In addition to piloting the IMAM approach, the GoE has started to implement the revised national CMAM Guidelines endorsed in June 2019.

The HEW are being trained both on changes introduced in the management of SAM and on the management of MAM in children 6 to 59 months of age and PLW.  WFP Ethiopia is supporting the transition to the revised acute malnutrition guidelines, including the integration of MAM management and its monitoring into the HEP and transfer from NDRMC to MOH, and scale-up of the IMAM approach that strengthens the Continuum of Care in acute malnutrition programming.

However, there are implementation challenges that need to be addressed in order to maximize the impact of GoE and partner’s efforts to improve IMAM service coverage and quality.  For this to effect, the department of Nutrition and dietetics at the School of Public Health in Addis Ababa University is commissioned by the WFP to conduct implementation research to identify barriers and facilitators and further develop solutions to challenges being encountered in the management of acute malnutrition through the HEP.
