About the Country Program in Ethiopia

Action Against Hunger has been operational in Ethiopia since 1984 responding to both chronic and acute needs through a multi-sectoral strategy where Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support activities are integrated to have a meaningful impact on people’s resilience.

Action Against Hunger currently operates in 5 different regions (Oromia, Somali, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz and Gambella) with a portfolio of 20m USD/year of emergency, resilience building, research and innovation programs. We have a country team of around 600 staff in 17 regional and satellite offices. Our main donors in Ethiopia in 2020/2021 are: BHA, ECHO, Europaid, UNHCR, UNICEF, GFFO, BPRM, SIDA, EHF, WFP, CIAA and others.

I. Job Summary

Are you interested in Gender Equality in the workplace, and want to develop meaningful and practical experience within a Humanitarian Agency?

This is an exciting opportunity for a Gender Intern to join Action Against Hunger as they develop their Gender Minimum Standards and mainstreaming strategy across the mission.

The Gender Intern will need to live in Addis, and will support with specific administrative and sectoral duties assigned by their supervisor, primarily working under the direct supervision of the Protection team Technical Advisors.  She will learn about Action Against Hunger’s Gender minimum standards and mainstreaming approach and gain meaningful, and practical experience of humanitarian programming. The Gender intern will be based in Addis Ababa, with regular travel to our field operations to support and monitor the implementation of our gender activities.

Purpose:

The Gender Intern position is part of the wider Action Against Hunger internship program policy and implementation exercise that promotes and offers recent graduates a meaningful work experience that would enhance their knowledge, skills, attitudes and employability. By so doing, Action Against Hunger – Ethiopia also gains from the introduction of fresh talent and new perspectives to a specific sector projects or team.

Engagement:

The intern will engage with technical advisors and HR staff based in capital and at field levels with the field coordinators and gender teams.

Essential Job duties:

The intern is expected to execute and delivery the following activities:

• Provide support to the base “Gender Team” to roll-out the Gender Minimum Standards checklist

• Support the Female Staff Gender Conversations

• Monitor the progress of the gender activities and send to the Gender Steering Committee in Addis

• Support the education, awareness and training of humanitarian staff on Gender Sensitive, response and transformative programming approaches

• Support collecting information and participating in beneficiary surveys and focus group discussions to provide a bigger picture of gender issues, including participating in Gender Analysis and Rapid Protection Assessments.

• Support in collecting, organizing, filing or documenting regular gender program data and reports.

• Assist and help in the production of Gender Equality success stories and lessons.

• Undertake any relevant duties and tasks assigned by her supervisor.

• The intern will not have a supervisory role and responsibility.

III. Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this job, the intern is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with interruptions.

IV.  Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

• The duties of the position require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Should be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.

• The intern will receive a computer and it shall be managed as per the organization’s IT policy.

• The intern will make travel to various bases (field offices) as required and in consultation with her line manager.  Hence, she must attest to a level of physical fitness capable of enduring physically difficult, highly stressful situations that may include the necessity to walk long distances, to eat a limited diet and/or to reside in potentially uncomfortable housing or tents.

• While visiting the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well is to infectious diseases.

I.  Required Qualifications
• Graduate degree or diploma in Gender Studies, Psychology, Health, Humanitarian Law, Management or similar from a recognized university or have graduated within the past two years.
• Graduates with a strong personal interest in gender equality, diversity and human rights.
• Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
• Must be above 18 years of age.
• Interns must have no medical limitations which would affect their serving in the function(s) expected from the program. They must confirm that they fit to work, as confirmed by a medical practitioner. In line with workplace equality and inclusion, persons with disabilities will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
II. Required Skills & Experience
• Experienced in organizing and participating in field-level data collection as part of a research study or program monitoring and evaluation
• Familiar with current national/international Gender strategies.
• Knowledge and skill of MS Office Suite is mandatory.
• Fluency (written and Spoken) in English is required. Amharic and any other local languages desirable.
• Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple tasks as well as self-direct with minimum supervision.
• Genuine interest in and commitment to the opportunity, the mission and principles of Action Against Hunger.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
