Program / Department Summary

The project is intended to reduce morbidity, mortality and sufferings associated with malnutrition for internally displaced communities who do not have access to primary health care services and basic nutrition services.

General Position Summary

The Nutrition/IYCF Officer will be responsible for management of moderate acute malnutrition and prevention of further deterioration of the nutrition situation through provision of IYCF counseling, supplementary foods, timely screening, health and nutrition education and capacity building and technical support to the Health Centers and Health Posts on the management of moderate acute malnutrition. She/he is responsible to work closely with the Woreda, Kebele, Community, and Religious Leaders and Health Development Army for the effective implementation and linkage of IYCF program within CMAM in the community and facility. In addition, the position holder is also expected to provide a consistent and high-quality technical support in relation to IYCF implementation and will assist Community Mobilizers and TSF officers in operational Woreda to build strong IYCF implementation package.

The position holder will spend approximately 90% of their time traveling throughout the project sites.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Strategy & Vision

·       Collaborate with other team member for effective integration between other services like Nutrition and health services

·       Collaborate with Local authorities and other partners to harmonize different efforts for better impact and sustainability.

·       Able to learn and update his/ her information or knowledge to adapt the changing situation and context

Program Management

  • Respect the dignity of beneficiaries, carers and members of the community.
  • To participate in Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP) distributions and to work in the allocated position for each distribution points and participate on hygiene promotion campaigns
  • Ensure Mother-to-Mother Support Groups stablished/strengthened and appropriate IYCF messages conveyed
  • To ensure accurate anthropometric measurement of each beneficiary
  • Ensure that the recording of the measurements and comments in record books and on beneficiary cards is accurate.
  • Ensure SFP foods and medicines are given out according to the protocols.
  • Ensure that each carer receives proper health education at each distribution.
  • Ensure that any severely malnourished are referred to the OTP or SC for better management
  • Ensure the amount of food given to the beneficiaries is in line with the national protocol.
  • Assist the team in health and nutrition education and cooking demonstration sessions.
  • Track and monitor POUWTC are being applied and treated water are used by targeted beneficiaries
  • Generate ideas to strengthen the development of the nutrition unit.
  • Always uphold the image and values of MC.
Team Management
  • Supports Community Mobilizer and TSF Officer in managing MAM cases
  • Assist the community volunteer (CV) and OTP Nurse where required.
  • Assist in hygiene promotion and sensitization campaigns and any other tasks when required

·       Creates and maintain relationship with community volunteers and help them to contribute for program

·       Always upholds the image and values of Mercy Corps

·       Educate the community to improve their health and nutrition services seeking behavior and motivate them to come to health facilities

·       Educate Mothers/Caregivers on essential IYCF messaging’s


·       Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.

·       Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.

·       Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC’s policies, procedures, and values always and in all in-country venues.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge and Experience
  • Diploma or BSc in Nutrition, Health or other health related fields
  • Willingness and ability to perform field works and travel to the remote areas within the sites
  • Ability to interact effectively with the diverse ethnic groups throughout the sites
  •  Previous experience in IYCF/nutrition implementation, anthropometric measurement and data collection
  • Previous work experience with a non-governmental organization especially Mercy corps in community work.
  •  Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Organized, reliable and good communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak English and Affan Oromo fluently
  •  Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team
