Background

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Sub Office and direct supervision of the Emergency Health Coordinator, the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of quality health services as part of the IOM Mobile Health and Nutrition teams, in connection with other IOM emergency and post crisis (EPC) activities. In particular, he/she will be responsible for the following:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Participate in health and nutritional assessments of women in the reproductive age group, and of children
  • Provide ante-natal and post-natal care for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers as well as planned parenthood and safe family planning advice; this will include ante-natal care outreach services where needed
  • Identify mothers at-risk, recognize potential maternal and childbirth complications during ante-natal, intra-natal and post-natal check-ups and manage or refer them accordingly.
  • Conduct skilled birth delivery.
  • Provide post-natal care with reference to breastfeeding, good nutrition, immunization, personal hygiene and educate mothers on new born and child health care.
  • Participate in routine and mass vaccination activities
  • Initiate the development of women discussion groups and breastfeeding mother groups to raise awareness on infant and child nutrition, proper breastfeeding techniques, the importance of vaccinations for children under five and on other relevant topics
  • Conduct community-based health education and awareness raising sessions based on identified health problems in the area of operation
  • Register patients seen, maintain medical documentation of the work done in the primary health care units and community including maternal and neonatal/child mortality and morbidity using age and sex disaggregated data; this includes registration of births as appropriate
  • Submit weekly and monthly reports on maternal and child health activities in the facility and community, and inform the Health Officer for any unusual or potential health issues of concern
  • Maintain quality standards and ensure that all medical information is kept confidential
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with the IDP communities, host community and be a team player with other health professionals as well as other IOM teams working in the sites
  • Support IOM nurses in conducting regular inventory of medicines and medical supplies and the procurement of medicines, medical supplies, supplementary nutrition packages etc. when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements:

Educational Qualification
  • University degree in enrolled Midwifery with additional certificates and training is required. Applicant needs to be a holder of a valid practicing certificate from a recognized institution with 5 years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Field experience in implementing health services for migrants, refugee and displaced persons and other vulnerable groups; including early recovery or post crisis emergency health programming
  • Familiar with programs like MDSR (Maternal death surveillance and response), MISP
  • Experience in emergency health response
  • Experience in INGO/NGOs & International organizations is an asset;
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate.

Languages

  • Knowledge of English and Amharic is required.
  • Knowledge of local language is an advantage.
