The director admitted that there is lack of medications and other medical supplies in the hospital. He also recognized that duty payments have not been made for the hospital staff in the past couple of months. The director justified that the lack in the provision of medications and other medical supplies is as a result of the budget constraints the hospital is facing.

Dr Andualem Deneke explained that the budget allocated for Tiqur Anbessa Specialized hospital is less than the actual demand of the hospital. Dr Andualem added that the amount of money allocated for medications in a year is between 60 – 80 million Birr while the hospital treats approximately 500 thousand patients per year.

According to the director, Tiqur Anbessa specialized hospital doesn’t get budget directly from ministry of finance. That is because the hospital is budgeted as a teaching hospital rather than a service providing tertiary hospital. And this has decreased the hospital’s budget significantly.

According to Dr Andualem the low budget results in spending the money even before the year begins. For example In the beginning Ethiopian year 2014 the hospital was in a debt of 64 million birr.
