What is CPD?
• Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to all activities health professionals undertake formally to maintain, update and develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes in response to the health service needs of the public.
• CPD denotes to the period of education and training of health professionals commencing after completion of basic or postgraduate health professional training.
Goal of CPD
• To ensure quality health service by competent health professionals
• To link continuing education unit (CEU) with license renewal
Modalities of CPD Courses Delivery
Should encompass integrated practical and theoretical components
– Can be delivered in the form of electronic, live or blended programs

Category I

– Research(publish a research article in peer review journal) and writing a

NB. The above mentioned CPD activities have allocated CEUs (please refer the FMOH CPD directive)
Principles
• Health practitioners should commit themselves to meeting the requirements for continuing education in the belief that the practitioner and patient/client will reap the benefits of lifelong learning.
Roles and responsibilities
Every health professional shall:-
• Enroll and engage in CPD activities to develop, maintain and update
• Evaluate the training value of the activity or course and its appropriateness for the learning needs;
• Ascertain the legality of CPD providers before taking the courses
• Comply with the specified continuing education units of activities in each year;
• Ensure possession of a certificate for every activities
• Attended and keep these for at least three years; and

What are the requirements for Health Professionals’ License Renewal?
– CPD will give you a CEU (Continuing Educational Unit) which is required for your license renewal. Any health professional is required to have:-
– 30 CEU per year
– 90 CEU at the end of third year
– CEU is collected from accredited CPD provider
– The maximum point to get from one CPD training is 15 CEU
– CEU should be earned from a particular course only once within a licensure period except for ethics which should be collected every year with 5 CEU.
– CEU collected during one Budget year cannot be transferred to next year
N.B This CPD training was planned by MoH on Hidar 2011 E.C and it Started Implementation starting from the Ethiopian Year 2013.
