Description

DIMENSIONS OF THE ROLE

The IYCF nurse is expected to conduct IYCF activities at Woreda level:

  • Detailed assessment of child feeding practices in women that require additional support or reveal difficulties.
  • Maintain clear communication with all other CMAM program staff regarding the status of beneficiaries, including OTP nurse, measures.
  • Provide tailored one to one counselling sessions, based on initial assessments, offering practical advice and education to mothers on the key issues of infant and Young child feeding practices.
  • Ensure all mothers/care givers are aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the initial 6 months.
  • Discourage and educate mothers on the dangers of feeding bottles through creating strong awareness in the community
  • Provide mothers with practical advice on correct attachment and positioning when breastfeeding, timely introduction of complementary foods and respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with IYCF.
  • Ensure a comfortable, calm environment for counselling sessions and maintain good relationships with the beneficiaries.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

The post holder is held accountable for the following specific deliverables:

  • Responsible for reporting and communication of progress and achievement of the specific assigned task
  • Complete and maintain individual breastfeeding beneficiary report cards.
  • Perform close monitoring of all beneficiaries, including follow up checks with community mobilisers (HDAs) and summaries of total number of mothers attended to.
  • Conduct all duties in a professional manner following Plan International Ethiopia staff regulations and charter
  • Inform the Nutrition Supervisor of any professional problems encountered
  • Establish strong communication links with all other CMAM staff, providing advice and support to all other staff members on IYCF issues as and when they arise.
  • In conjunction with HEWs & HDAs conduct education sessions within the surrounding community on the importance of IYCF practices.
  • Be flexible and adaptable with regards to the implementation of the daily task
  • Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Child Protection (CPP) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI) are fully embedded in accordance with the principles and requirements of the policy including relevant Implementation Standards and Guidelines as applicable to their area of responsibility. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring staff and associates are aware of and understand their responsibilities under these policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), their relevance to their area of work, and that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.

Contract duration : three months with possibility of extension

Job Requirements

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Diploma preferably in nursing
  • Minimum one year experience with INGO/NGO of Infant and young Child Feeding practices /treatment of malnourished children in Community Management of Acute Malnutrition is advantageous
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English and Amharic
  • High commitment to work with pastoral communities in remote and challenging environments

Desirable

  • Knowledge of local language and experience on pastoral community based project intervention (Emergency Nutrition focused) is an advantageous.
